The Kentucky Derby: A Historical Look at Horse Racing’s Finest

Sunday, November 6th, 2005

The dream started with a young man, Col. M. Lewis Clark, grandson of Gen. William Clark, the explorer. He visited England and France in 1872 and decided that he would start a racetrack in Kentucky to revive the state’s horse breeding industry. Development began soon after the trip on 80 acres he obtained from his two uncles, John and Henry Churchill. Funding was through membership subscriptions that sold at $100 a piece. The track was officially opened on May 17, 1875. Four races were held that day and the winner of the featured race, the Kentucky Derby, was a horse named Aristides. Two African Americans, Oliver Lewis and Ansel Williamson, trained and jockeyed Aristides. Throughout the years, the Kentucky Derby became the focal event for Churchill Downs.

Eventually, the Kentucky State Fair held activities at Churchill Downs, but the main attraction was then and still is today betting on that special horse to win. In 1875, the prize for winning was $2,850. The purse jumped to $5,460 in 1890 with Riley leading the pack as the thoroughbreds crossed the finish line. The winner of the Kentucky Derby in 1896 was Ben Brush with the first-place prize money totaling $4,850. The winner’s purse would remain at that figure for the next 17 years.

In 1913 there was a slight increase in prize money, but the following year the winner’s proceeds skyrocketed to $9,125. That same year Old Rosebud won by a hefty 8 lengths, setting a track record of 2:03 for the 2/5-mile oval. By 1915, the Derby had developed a reputation as a premier sporting event due to a 3-year publicity push. The Golden Jubilee Derby in 1924 featured a purse of $52,775. Through the years, the prize money continued to grow. In 1970, Secretariat became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years, with a Derby win timed at 1 minute, 59 seconds. The net for Secretariat’s owners was a whopping $127,800. In May of 2004 the winner of the Derby took home a record $5,854,800.

While Churchill Downs was the hub of betting, racing, and other activities, it went through leadership changes quite frequently. Col. M. Lewis Clark and his Louisville Jockey Club started the annual show in 1875. Although the first Kentucky Derby had been a success, there were financial problems. In an attempt to provide a more secure financial situation, the race was incorporated under the New Louisville Jockey Club on November 24, 1894. William F. Schulte became president and Col. M. Lewis Clark was appointed the presiding judge.

Tragedy struck with the suicide of Clark in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 22, 1899. Financial problems plagued the track again and former mayor, Charles Grainger, Charlie Price, and Matt J. Winn took over on October 1, 1902. The first sign of profitability was in 1903. The Kentucky Jockey Club took over all 4 racetracks in Kentucky in 1918-1919. Churchill Downs-Latona became the legal name of the track in 1937 after the sale of several of the other racetracks. October 6,1949, marked the death of Col. Matt J. Winn, the man credited with making the Kentucky Derby the most prestigious race in the world. Bill Corum took over the helm and modernized the track.

The Kentucky Derby was televised for the first time on May 3,1952. In December of 1958, Bill Corum died and was replaced by Wathen Knebelkamp. Under new direction, Churchill Downs underwent more renovation. Also, the City of Louisville tried to purchase the racetrack, but the aldermen had the final word and wouldn’t allow it. Around 1968 there was another battle for ownership of Churchill Downs and this time the Derby Protection Group became the highest bidder.

Lynn Stone was named the new president in 1970. He was successful in fending off 2 more attempts to take over the racetrack. But when financial problems arose, Stone resigned in August 1984, to be replaced by Thomas Meeker. Through the good leadership of Meeker, Chairman Warner Jones, and the current Chairman William Farish, Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby have flourished.

Besides the controversy related to takeovers and changes in leadership, there were legal issues as well. In 1908, betting began to be a problem to the point that the Louisville city administration was cracking down on bookmakers. A loophole made it possible to continue the parimutuel betting that Col. Clark had imported in 1875 from France. Problems arose again and there was a government ban on horseracing in 1945, but VE Day changed everything and the Derby continued on June 9th of that year.

As was noted earlier, African Americans have played a key role since the first race and have made major contributions throughout the derby’s history. Alonzo Lonnie Clayton was an early jockey who, at in 1892 the age of 15, rode Azra, making him the youngest jockey to achieve victory. Erskin Henderson was the 6th African American to win the Kentucky Derby, riding Joe Cotton in 1885. Babe Hurd rode Appollo in 1882 and won. George Garrett Lewis, another African American, jockeyed Fonso in the 1880 Derby. These are 4 of 15 African Americans who won the Kentucky Derby and have their names enshrined in the Kentucky Derby Museum.

In addition, women jockeys have been active in the Derby; the five who have run for the roses are Patti Cooksey, Diane Crump, Julie Krone, Andrea Seefeldt, and Rosemary Homeister. Also, It has been fairly common throughout the years that women have been owners.

The Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs have become the hallmark of first-class horseracing by dealing with adversity and making adjustments. The Derby is a horserace unlike any other in terms of prestige, excitement, and quality competitors. Those who have played an important role in making the Derby a yearly tradition include the jockeys, trainers, breeders, administrators, owners, and those magnificent creatures, the horses that have run for the roses for 130 years. The brainchild of Col. M. Lewis Clark is much more than a horserace. It is an American institution.]]>

The Life Of Luxury(Green With Envy)

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

It is always nice to see how the other half lives, take for instance there is the

Life of Luxury: the George Hamilton way.

This is a TV show which looks at the lives of the Super Rich in which the first episode looks at the PlayBoy Mansion, a collection of multi-million dollar homes, hip-hop half-billion dollar empires and some queens of shopping.

Tom Delay’s Life of Luxury over the last six years:

Public documents reviewed by The Associated Press document his 48 visits to golf clubs and resorts; 100 flights aboard private company planes; 200 stays at hotels, many world-class; and 500 meals at restaurants, some averaging nearly $200 for a dinner for two. Not all paid for by Tom Delay.

ARCHESTRATUS: THE LIFE OF LUXURY

ARCHESTRATUS was a Sicilian Greek who wrote a poem that was an actual cookbook describing styles of Greek food in antiquity In travelling throughout the Greek world - Greece, Southern Italy and Sicily, the coast of Asia Minor, the Black Sea - Archestratus shows us how the ancient Greeks were extremely cosmopolitan. His influences - ingredients, combinations of flavours, techniques - are drawn from a wide Mediterranean background, taking in a diversity of ideas unrestricted by the topography of the Greek mainland.

The Life of Luxury: Check out the Robb Report: Luxury Homes

The Robb Report features this Beverly Hills house. The owners, a retired industrialist and his wife, who is a trustee of Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art, wanted the architect to maintain a simple palette that would not compete with their art collection, which includes a beautiful collection of contemporary art.

The Life of Luxury’s Most Expensive ZIP Codes

From Beverly Hills to TriBeCa, from notorious enclaves of mansions and lush lawns to little-known niches of wealth, this is where the most expensive real estate in the country can be found.

Many of these neighborhoods are rarified places, of course. They are close to beaches and golf courses and prime yacht moorings–or at least within spitting distance of the power centers that are the sources of great wealth. they have high tax bases, expensive private schools, exclusive restaurants and they are not all located close to Rodeo Drive.

The Life of Luxury; Some Expensive Must-Have Items

We must be getting richer. Designer items are becoming more and more popular, we are no longer happy with a cheap watch but want an Omega or a Tag Heuer.

According to the Federal Reserve, the net wealth of American households hit a high at the end of last year, increasing from $46.59 trillion in the third quarter of 2004 to $48.53 trillion in the fourth quarter. Rising real estate and stock prices helped push the country’s household net worth up 4% between the third and fourth quarters. You can now buy a $67,000 hand-crafted bathtub; Luxury is no longer confined to the affluent. To enhance people’s lives they are willing to pay more for luxury items like expensive perfumes and designer handbags. Sometimes it’s hard to justify spending much more on an item when something considerably less expensive offers the same functionality.

You can, for instance, buy a watch for $10 and you can buy a watch for $20,000 that offers the exact same functionality so where is the rationale for buying the expensive watch? Still, the expensive watches get sold and people are proud to own them. The exclusive maker of mattresses for the British royal family will reject a container of cashmere if it is deemed to be clumpy or defective in any way, says the director for the American division. For each bed, workers cover thousands of springs in calico cotton; the damask cases are hand-woven in Belgium If you have to ask how much these mattresses cost you can’t afford them.

Life of Luxury: living on your own Cruise Ship

The World is the only private luxury community at sea. It is a Cruise Ship built with apartments and studios for long term residency rather than vacation cruises.

For sale originally were 106 apartments, 19 studio apartments and 40 studios, with square footage starting at 675 for studios and maxing out at 3,242 for a three bedroom apartment with optional jet pool. With the exception of studios, which have more limited amenities, The World’s residential accommodations include fully-equipped kitchens, living room, veranda and all furniture and audio/video equipment. Studios an Apartments can be had from 1.4 million to 4.8 million dollars and annual maintenance costs start at $100,000.

This is a 40,000-ton ship which could easily carry 1,500 passengers but the World Residensea carries an average of 285 guests plus a crew of 252. The passenger distribution is about 40% Americans, 40% Europeans and 20% from other nations. The price of a “home” on board the ship includes furniture, appliances, carpet, draperies, linen, china, cutlery and crystal. Maintenance charges will cover daily housekeeping service, repairs and replacement of appliances, fixtures and fittings supplied by the builder.]]>

The Nintendo Revolution Controller – Skepticism Meets Reality

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Nintendo has been an innovator in the video game industry since the early 1980’s. From the very beginning, Nintendo engineers have had to prove themselves. The introduction of the analogue controller and even the “rumble pack” was met with a great deal of skepticism, yet are considered industry standards today. However, a single hand remote style controller is arguably a much larger innovation and is met with even more skepticism.

It has been reported on several websites that the Nintendo Revolution will be compatible with Gamecube titles. Of course this raises questions on how the new controller will function with these games

“What we are telling people right now is that there are several peripherals in the works that will be used for the older games,” said Perrin Kaplan, vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Nintendo. “Of course, people will be able to plug their Gamecube controller right in and use that, but if they want, they can use the Revolution’s peripherals for an entirely new and fresh experience.”

Will gamers be able to adapt to a single hand controller? I think the answer to this question will depend on game developers. The success of the controller and the console for that matter depends on whether-or-not game developers will be able to produce games which compliment the new controller.

This also raises questions over game cross-over from one system to another. With the introduction of a whole new controller, effectively changing the way we play games, well we see a drop in big title games available for multiple systems?

With the release of the new teaser and a slew of new images, people are forgetting that the new Nintendo Revolution controller is not at the final design stage.

“No, this is not the final design. You won’t see that until the release is here, but we are getting much closer,” explained Kaplan.

Over the next several months, more information will become available. Information which will either put much of the skepticism to rest, or more likely, create even more. With a product like the Nintendo Revolution controller, apprehension and skepticism are natural, making this a critical time for Nintendo. With the release of the Xbox before the end of 2005 and the processing power of the Playstation 3 Nintendo really does have to come up with something revolutionary to compete in the next generation game console market. Does Nintendo really have something special for us? Only Time well tell.]]>

The Power Of Hollywood On Youngsters

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Despite thousands of TV appearances and other interviews in newspapers, Michael Moore was still beaten at his own game when a documentary tracing the positive qualities of Bush was released that same year. Bush won the election and Moore lost his appeal to have his film nominated for the Oscar in the best picture category.

On a less politically charged and serious note, Hollywood has mainly influenced style and skyrocketed the sales of certain products. In, Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith sported a pair of Ray Bans and Will Smith gave its famous tagline “I make these look good.” The film was the reason for one of the sunglasses company’s highest revenues.

James Bond films are known to receive the majority of the financing from the BMW and other car dealerships. Recently Bond has driven a BMW z8 and an Astin Martin. Both vehicles saw great sales after the films were released.

The Karate Kid and Bruce Lee films flooded children, especially young boys to Martial art classes. The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Harry Potter films encouraged children to read more books. “Reading a book became a fun pastime. Something you could discuss with your friends and not be afraid of being uncool,” says Julie Brown, a proud mother of two.

Open Water encouraged more scuba diving. Primer encouraged taking more physiques classes. Machiavelli Hangman (http://www.hangmanmovie.com) created an instant interest in the works of the Italian philosopher, Nicollo Machiavelli and his ethics.

“After Machiavelli Hangman, Machiavelli’s doctrine books have been selling like mad and there’s a surprising amount of searches on the internet engines like yahoo and google.”

Hollywood may have a great influence on its viewers, but in the end, it always falls on the viewer’s shoulders to make a rational decision. “Just because a film shows two people shooting each other dead, doesn’t mean that you have to go out and do it. You use your common sense. If it was like that, everyone would be running around killing each other… with large tanks,” says Brown.]]>

The Proper Use of Comic Book Supplies will help you Maintain a Top-Notch Collection

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

shape, comic book supplies will become part of your
collecting life. As soon as a magazine is printed there are
natural environmental forces going to work to try and
destroy the ink and the paper. You have put in a lot of
time, effort and enjoyment in acquiring all your comics.
You don’t want them to turn back to the dust and elements
from which they came do you? So the proper use of comic
book supplies is essential.

Elements such as humidity, temperature, pollutants, human
skin oils and even the chemicals of the printed materials
themselves, will start to deteriorate and discolor your
comic books from day one. Comic book supplies and tools
that have been developed over the years to help us combat
these natural forces are de-acidification paper, polymer
type storage bags, stiff backing material, storage boxes
and desiccants (dehumidification materials). Not only will
these comic book supplies protect your comics for your own
enjoyment, they will add to reinforce the future value of
each comic book.

Most all of these comic book supplies can typically be
located down at your local comic book shop. But as I have
discovered lately, there can be a world of difference in
preservation abilities depending on what materials are used
in the manufacture of comic book supplies. Quite typically
what you may find downtown will be of sufficient protective
quality to protect your comics for quite a while. Although,
polybags, to put your comics into, are quite common and
fairly cheap, Mylar bags are definitely the way to go. They
will protect for 100 years (that may be a little overboard)
as opposed to 2 or 3 years for poly.

There has been a lot of elaborate science, particularly
chemistry, which has gone into comic book supplies
preservation material manufacturing the last several years.
MicroChamber material has been developed that will increase
preservation from de-acidification and environmental
breakdown for a vastly superior time period as opposed to
typical comic book supplies materials available today.
Beware though, comic book supplies manufactured with this
new material can become quite costly. But if you have some
serious collector’s items, which you feel are worth a
significant amount of cash, isn’t the investment worth it?
It is also no secret that CGC uses these comic book
supplies materials in every comic book they grade.

I have created a page at my comic book site, which
incorporates links to some rather technical scientific
articles on preservation and using MicroChamber materials.
You can read an in-depth discussion at

www.comic-book-collection-made-easy.com/comic-book-supplies.html .

Be forewarned though, You may need a moderate understanding
of chemistry and physics to completely follow some of the
discussions. But the articles will open your eyes to what
is available in the comic book industry for comic book
supplies preservation supplies these days.

Now if you have a rather rare back issue that may well have
a high dollar value, here is a process worth considering.
De-acidification products are usually used to neutralize
acids in the paper prior to storage of most paper products
of a pulp nature. This is not to be taken lightly, as it is
considered by most to be an extensive form of restoration.
The current understanding of the process is that the
staples are removed and the sheets are submerged, film
developer style, in a bath of de-acidification material.
Then the entire book is rebuilt with new staples. This
process can cost around $50 per comic book, when done by a
professional, but will restore and increase the life
expectancy of your comic book by many years. This process,
in my opinion, should only be considered for already
deteriorated comics that may have a considerable future
worth if restored.

One final item to consider, especially if you live in a
high humidity area is the use of descants as part of your
comic book supplies arsenal. A desiccant is a chemical
sieve for water, and is available for industry use in small
packets or in buckets. For our purposes an 8-oz can (that
looks like you’d keep a grasshopper in) can be simply put
inside the box to absorb moisture and indicates when it is
full by changing from crystal colored to pink. These same
cans can then be reused by baking them for 3-4 hours in an
oven at about 350 F. Each canister can cost around $9-$10
from one supplier called GAYLORDMART. 1 canister per short
box and 2 per long box should be sufficient. Another
consideration is the little packets typically found in a
box of shoes. These are even more inexpensive, but would
require further research to insure no harm would come to
each comic book.

So as you build your valuable comic book collection, you
will want to put some serious consideration into the comic
book supplies that you will need. Materials and supplier
source will become important variables in your overall
decisions. I will have more interesting topics and sources
from time to time at my site, so come on over and visit.
You may even want to bookmark it.]]>

The real unwritten rules of online dating - The experts tell

Friday, October 28th, 2005

Of course you know about online dating safety and how to protect yourself from unwanted attention. But do you know the unwritten rules, the tips and tricks that will make your online dating experience much better?

Keep Your Expectations Low

It has been estimated that 96% of the people who use online dating services fail to find a compatible person with whom to have a dating relationship. Part of the reason for this, though, is that most people approach online matchmaking with unrealistic expectations. When they don’t find a perfect match after one or two dates they give up and try something else.

Despite what the advertising wants you to believe, your perfect match isn’t going to just fall out of the sky one day. It takes diligent searching, careful screening, and lots of dates to increase your chances of success. Keep your expectations low key; don’t set yourself up for failure by getting too excited when you see an interesting profile or meet an interesting person.

Don’t Respond Too Quickly

Most online dating services won’t tell you this because they make money from email messages between members, but don’t be too quick to answer when a message comes in. Many online dating experts suggest waiting 24 to 48 hours to respond, and also say never to respond on a weekend or holiday. Their reasoning is that when you respond too quickly it makes you appear desperate and also doesn’t allow you to pause and carefully compose an appropriate response.

Yes, it’s exciting when someone notices your profile and makes contact, but don’t let the excitement run away with you. Relax, take a deep breath, and if necessary refer back to the previous section on maintaining realistic expectations.

Keep It Light

When you answer an email, keep the tone light and friendly. Online messages are NOT an appropriate avenue for providing your entire life history or unloading about your past hurts and current emotional state. Don’t be shallow and flip, of course, but do be conservative with what you write. And, as always, don’t reveal personally identifiable information via online messages.

Don’t Drag Things Along

Once you have exchanged a few messages, it’s time to either meet in person or move on. As a general rule of thumb, if more than three to five messages have been exchanged and you haven’t set up a date yet, then it’s time to say goodbye. Don’t allow yourself to be sucked into email communications that drag on for weeks or months at a time. Email is not a substitute for meeting and getting acquainted in person.

Tell The Truth

One of the great temptations of online personal ads is to embellish the truth about you. Whether it’s shaving a few years off your age, overstating your career achievements, or understating your body weight, remember that the truth will be revealed once you meet someone in person. It’s pointless to lie about such things and it undermines trust right from the start. As Mark Twain once said – “When in doubt, tell the truth.”]]>

The Shawshank Redemption, a Stephen King movie

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

The story is a cruel one, in which Andy Dufresne, an educated and kind man is wrongly convicted of his wife’s murder. During his time in prison he befriends several people, who are criminals, whereas Andy is not. His life is changed forever, as he deals with the troubles of incarceration.

Stephen King’s excellent character portrayal is not limited to his horror stories, and the characters in this story are some of his best. One could even believe this was based on a true story, but it is not, King has confirmed. The story is upsetting, puzzling and warming, and the movies popularity confirms people association with the story. I think it will always be a classic.

When released at the theatre The Shawshank Redemption did not achieve great success, despite the great buzz already generated by the Hollywood industry due to the great story. This was in part due to great competition at the time, and also the fact that the story is about a prison, which put many movie goers off. However, after the release to DVD the Shawshank Redemption sold in huge quantities making it a firm favorite.

The other stories from the Different Seasons book are
The Body – which became the movie, Stand by me
The Apt Pupil – which also became a movie called The Apt Pupil
The Club – which has yet to make it to the big screen

I would recommend the book to anyone who is a fan, as it is a great collection of stories. The Shawshank Redemption is a very popular story, whether read in a book or watched as a film.

The Truth About Women Revealed

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

Here are some powerful clues that can tell you if she is interested in you and the type of things she might be interested in in bed.

1) Is she biting her lower lip or licking it? She is definitely into you. This is a little signal that she isn’t even aware she is doing.

It ranks right up there with playing with her hair and crossing and uncrossing her legs.

2) Does she lean into you when you are talking? You have grabbed her attention.

3) Does she touch you alot? If she is caressing your arm or finding excuses to touch you then you have a huge chance of scoring tonight.

4) Does she love it when you order food for her and make decisions? This might be a sign that she wants you to take charge in the bedroom. If she enjoys having her hands help down by you during sex, she might be into a little light bondage.
Start with scarves to test her reaction.

5) Watch her while she eats her dinner. Does she really get into the meal, especially the dessert? Try adding some whipped cream or chocolate syrup to your night play.

6) Want a new way to turn her on? Try renting some erotic videos with a story line. Try the Red Shoe Diaries, Henry and June or Eyes Wide Shut. If she likes the scene in Eyes Wide Shut where they are wearing masks she may be open to experimentation and role play.

7) Want to get her in the mood? Try having a picnic on your living room floor. Include wine or champagne, strawberries, whipped cream and finger foods that you can feed each other.
She will find it romantic and you have the privacy she may need to show her appreciation.]]>

Ticket Tips on how to buy tickets from Premium Online Ticket Brokers

Friday, October 21st, 2005

•Always use an established ticket broker that is a good standing member of the BBB or other professional industry organization such as the NATB (National Association of Ticket Brokers).
•Make sure that you know you are not dealing with the box office itself, rather a third party broker and know how brokers operate.
•Ticket Brokers charge a premium price above what is listed on the ticket at the face value. They do not charge face value for tickets!
•Ticket brokers will determine ticket prices by the supply and demand of each particular event. Tickets could range from a few dollars over the face value to hundreds of dollars above the face value. It all depends on the market value for the event.
•Ticket brokers are much like travel agents or stockbrokers. They have access to everything you need to know about seating, venues, upcoming shows, and available tickets from industry sources.
•Ticket brokering is a very competitive business. Look for a broker that provides good, professional and courteous service.
•Ticket brokers will often only ship tickets to the address listed on your credit card billing statement. This is for your own
personal consumer safety. If an alternate shipping address is requested, ticket brokers may ask for a copy of a driver’s license. Don’t be alarmed, it’s a measure taken for your own consumer safety!

Ticket brokers provide a safe, secure and professional way to buy quality tickets. Just be prepared to pay a premium fee for the service they provide. Be sure to check out our recommended broker sites below:]]>
